Discussion: The Future of US Cultural Institutions

The Hill Center (921 Pennsylvania Ave. SE) has new public affairs series called At Issue. This month, the featured discussion is a talk by Philip Kennicott, Pulitzer Prize-winning art and architecture critic for The Washington Post Wednesday, May 14 from 7 to 9 p.m.

Kennicott will explore the mounting threats facing American cultural institutions—museums, performing arts centers, libraries, arts funding, and public broadcasting. In a recent Post article, he warned of the potential politicization of places like the Kennedy Center.

“Until a week ago, it was unthinkable that the president… would take direct control… fire board .. and install a widely disliked political operative,” he wrote. “…But now the thought has been thought.”

Can Donald Trump overtake the Kennedy Center? Or will he use it in the way similar to those utilized by historical authoritarians, as a vehicle for propaganda?
