Helicopters again circled Hill East and Miner Elementary School (601 15th St. NE) was put on lockdown just before noon Monday as police apparently pursued an injured party they linked to a shooting near Mount Olivet Cemetary.
“Miner Elementary was not involved in this incident, and officers have checked with Miner Elementary staff to ensure their safety,” a representative for the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said.
Police said Fifth District officers responded to the area around the 1200 block of Raum St. NE for the reports of gunshots. A lookout was given for a vehicle fleeing the area.
Witnesses reported seeing a black Mercedes travel the wrong way on 15th Street NE before it turned at a high speed onto E Street NE. Shortly after noon, an occupied cruiser could be seen stopped behind an empty black Mercedes on E Street NE. The Mercedes had a flat front enger tire.
Officers said that as Fifth District officers went to Raum Street, an adult male with a gun shot would was found inside a residence on the 1600 block of G Street NE. That man is conscious and breathing. Police did not hypothesize on the connection.
There is no 1600 block of G Street NE; G Street ends in a short stretch along the 1400 block before connecting with Gales Street. But, police had blocked off the 1600 block of F Street NE Monday afternoon.
F Street was closed between 15th and 16th Street. 15th Street was closed between F and Benning Road NE and 14th Street was closed between F and G Streets NE. 16th and Kramer Streets NE were also closed for investigation. Police asked motorists to avoid the area.
Officers emphasized that it remains an active scene, and all information is preliminary.
