Confused about what the Department of Public Works (DPW) is up to? They’ve been in high demand these past few months. At the same time, COVID-19 has shaken up regular service provision.
Recently, the Office of Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen (D) sent out a newsletter that included some key info about DPW services, and we thought we should share it, plus a few more details:
Parking enforcement returning to District schools: DPW has not been issuing tickets for many sign violations. But parking enforcement will begin to issue warnings for parking in District school zones March 15 to March 19. The warning tickets have a zero dollar fine; however, vehicles that receive a warning ticket may be subject to relocation to a legal parking space with no tow fee. Vehicle owners should call 311 to locate their vehicle.
$25 Fines will be issued beginning March 22. Commercial vehicle parking enforcement continues uninterrupted.
The following DPW modified services remain in effect as a result of the COVID-19 public health emergency:
- Ticketing for safety violations (e.g., blocking a fire hydrant) continues.
- The following ticketing is suspended:
- Emergency no parking violations (vehicles will be relocated without charge and will not be ticketed).
- Expired District license plates and inspection stickers.
- Expired residential parking permits.
- Expired meters.
- Vehicle booting and towing is suspended.
Tree and Leaf Collection Extended to March 19: Call 311 to schedule a leaf collection. Place holiday trees where your trash and recycling is normally collected. If yours is still sitting there, call 311 –or tweet a photo @dcdpw
Residential Street Sweeping Remains Postponed Indefinitely. Commercial corridor street sweeping remains as long as temperatures are above 40 degrees.
