USA Today Reporter Killed in H Street Hit-and-Run

A man riding his motorcycle on H Street Friday evening was hit by a car and dragged several blocks, say witnesses. The 53-year-old man, a reporter for USA Today, died at hospital.

The 47-year-old driver is suspected to have been impaired and attempted to flee the scene. He is currently in custody.

USA Today reports on the incident, the family he leaves and the bereaved newsroom.

Credit Card Snatch-and-Run on Eight Street SE

On Friday at about 2:30 p.m., a man was making a purchase at a business on the 400 block of Eighth Street SE. When he retrieved his credit to make a purchase another man snatched his card and fled.

The suspect is described as a shirtless black male wearing black jeans and black shoes. He also has dreads or plats pulled up and held together with a red and yellow bandana. He was last seen fleeing south on Eighth Street SE.

Five individuals were arrested on the Hill this weekend on charges of driving under the influence, a fact that seems particularly significant in light of the Friday traffic death on H Street. There were also several robberies that have not so far led to arrests.

At 3:45 a.m. Saturday, a man was arrested on the 1400 block of Independence Avenue SW on charges of Driving Under the Influence.

At 5:11 a.m. Saturday, a man was arrested on the 600 block of Massachusetts Avenue NE on charges of Driving Under the Influence.

At 6:30 a.m. Saturday, a man was arrested on the 1100 block of Half Street SE on charges of Robbery.

At 7:53 a.m. Saturday, there was a robbery at a convenience store on the 1100 block of Capitol Street SW.

At 9:21 a.m. Saturday, a man was arrested on the 700 block of Langston Terrace NE on charges of Stalking.

At 1:50 p.m. Saturday, a woman was arrested on the 100 block of P Street SW on charges of Driving Under the Influence.

At 4:25 p.m. Saturday, a woman was arrested on the 1600 block of F Street NE on charges of Simple Assault.

At 4:25 p.m. Saturday, two men were arrested on the 1500 block of F Street NE on charges of Assault on a Police Officer.

At 6:06 p.m. Saturday, there was a robbery on the 200 block of Pennsylvania Avenue SE.

At 7:16 p.m. Saturday, a woman was arrested on the 500 block of 16th Street SE on charges of Simple Assault.

 

At 3:30 a.m. Sunday, a man was arrested on the 1300 block of Florida Avenue NE on charges of Driving Under the Influence.

At 3:27 a.m. Sunday, there was a robbery on the 500 block of I Street SW.

At 4:41 a.m. Sunday, there was a robbery on the 200 block of 14th Street SE.

At 4:50 a.m. Sunday, a man was arrested on the 800 block of Potomac Avenue SE on charges of Driving Under the Influence.

At 2:55 p.m. Sunday, a man was arrested on the 1200 block of Bladensburg Road NE on charges of Simple Assault.

At 3:16 p.m. Sunday, a care was stolen on the 1100 block of Eighth Street SE.

At 3:47 p.m. Sunday, there was an assault with a dangerous weapon on the 1200 block of Bladensburg Road NE.

At 5:16 p.m. Sunday, a man was arrested on the 1300 block of Half Street SE on charges of Simple Assault.

At 6 p.m. Sunday, a man was arrested on the 900 block of Seventh Street SW on charges of Simple Assault.

Reporting Illegal Activity

Prompt and detailed reporting of suspicious activities helps prevent crime. If a citizen sees suspicious activity, or any activity that seems out of the ordinary, immediately call 911.

When reporting suspicious activity, give an accurate description. Here are some things to include:

  • Brief description of the activity;
  • Date, time and location of the activity;
  • Physical identifiers of anyone you observed;
  • Descriptions of vehicles;
  • Information about where people involved in suspicious activities may have gone;
  • Your name and information.

“As we continue to work with our community in the prevention of crime, we ask that if you see something suspicious you us immediately,” says First District Commander Morgan C. Kane, MPA.
